Lighting is one of the most underestimated elements of kitchen design. Clients often arrive with strong opinions about cabinetry, worktops, and appliances — but lighting is frequently deferred to “whatever the electrician suggests.” The result is a kitchen that looks flat, casts shadows across prep areas, and fails to create the atmosphere the room deserves.
Good kitchen lighting is not complicated, but it does require planning. The best results come from layering three types of light — task, ambient, and accent — resolved during the bespoke kitchen design phase, not after the cabinets are fitted.
Task lighting: light where you work
Task lighting illuminates the areas where you perform specific activities — chopping, cooking, reading recipes, and cleaning. Without adequate task light, even the most beautiful kitchen feels impractical.
Under-cabinet lighting is the most important task layer in most kitchens. LED strips mounted beneath wall cabinets illuminate the worktop below, eliminating the shadows cast by overhead lights and the cabinets themselves. Specify these during design so wiring, switch positions, and driver locations are planned before first-fix electrics.
Pendant lights over islands and peninsulas serve a dual role — task light for prep and ambient light for the room. The height, spacing, and diameter of pendants should be proportioned to the island, not chosen from a catalogue in isolation.
Cooker hood lighting provides focused illumination over the hob. Integrated hood lights are functional but rarely sufficient on their own. Consider supplementary lighting if your hob is positioned where shadows fall during evening cooking.
Ambient lighting: the general glow
Ambient lighting provides overall illumination — the base layer that makes a kitchen feel bright and welcoming. Without it, task and accent lights feel disconnected and the room can seem gloomy in areas away from work surfaces.
Recessed downlights are the most common ambient solution. Used thoughtfully, they work well. Used indiscriminately — rows of identical downlights at regular intervals — they create flat, clinical light that lacks warmth and depth.
Consider spacing downlights to align with zones rather than grids. A cluster over the dining area, a row along a kitchen run, and none in areas that receive sufficient light from adjacent rooms often produces a better result than uniform coverage.
Dimmable circuits are essential. A kitchen that needs bright, functional light at 7am should feel softer and more atmospheric at 8pm. Separate dimmable circuits for ambient, task, and accent layers give you control over the mood without compromising practicality.
Accent lighting: depth and character
Accent lighting adds visual interest — highlighting architectural details, creating warmth, and giving the kitchen a sense of depth that ambient light alone cannot achieve.
Plinth lighting — LED strips beneath base cabinets — creates a floating effect and provides low-level illumination for late-evening visits without flooding the room with brightness.
Interior cabinet lighting transforms glass-fronted units, open shelving, and larder cupboards into display features. Switched independently, these lights add drama without being lit all the time.
Feature pendants — a statement fitting over a dining table or a sculptural pendant above an island — contribute accent as much as task light. Choose fittings that complement the kitchen’s material palette without competing with it.
Natural light: the starting point
Before planning artificial lighting, understand how natural light enters the room. Which direction does the kitchen face? Where do shadows fall at different times of day? Is there scope to enlarge a window or add a roof lantern as part of a kitchen renovation?
Artificial lighting should complement natural light, not fight it. A north-facing kitchen in a Hertfordshire terrace needs a more generous artificial scheme than a south-facing extension that is flooded with daylight until evening.
Colour temperature and consistency
LED lighting is available in a range of colour temperatures, measured in kelvin. Warmer tones (around 2,700K) create a relaxed, residential feel. Cooler tones (4,000K and above) feel more clinical and are better suited to utility spaces.
For residential kitchens, we generally recommend 3,000K as a balanced starting point — warm enough to feel inviting, bright enough for accurate food preparation. Consistency matters: mixing colour temperatures within the same room creates a subtly discordant feel that is hard to identify but easy to sense.
Controls and switching
Think about how you will actually use the lights. Walking into a dark kitchen and fumbling for four separate switches is impractical. Consider:
- A master switch for all kitchen lighting at the main entry point
- Separate switches or dimmers for task, ambient, and accent circuits
- Smart controls or scene-setting if you want pre-programmed combinations for cooking, dining, and entertaining
Resolve switch positions during design. Moving a switch after plastering is achievable but unnecessary if planned early.
Integrated lighting and cabinetry
In handleless and contemporary kitchens, integrated lighting is part of the cabinetry design itself. Recessed profiles, shadow-gap LEDs, and concealed strips require coordination between the lighting designer, cabinet maker, and electrician.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Relying solely on downlights without under-cabinet task lighting
- Choosing pendant fittings before the island dimensions are confirmed
- Specifying lighting after first-fix electrics are complete
- Using non-dimmable circuits in a room that needs to shift from task to atmosphere
- Mixing colour temperatures across different fittings
