What to Expect from a Kitchen Design Consultation

Kitchen design consultation in a Hertfordshire home

Considering a new kitchen but not sure where to begin? You are in good company. Most of our clients contact us with the same quiet uncertainty: they know their current kitchen is not working, but they are unsure whether they need a full renovation, new cabinetry within the existing layout, or simply better storage.

A design consultation exists to answer those questions — clearly, calmly, and without any pressure to commit before you are ready.

Before we visit

You do not need to prepare anything elaborate. There is no expectation to tidy, clear cupboards, or have decisions made in advance. It helps if you have thought loosely about:

  • What frustrates you most about your current kitchen
  • How your household uses the space day to day
  • Any upcoming changes — an extension, a growing family, more entertaining
  • Any priorities or constraints you already have in mind

You can get in touch with as much or as little detail as you like. We will arrange a visit at a time that suits you.

We listen first

Every consultation begins with conversation. We want to understand your routines, your household, and what a well-designed kitchen would actually mean for you. For some clients, that is a generous island for family breakfasts. For others, it is a handleless contemporary space with concealed storage and integrated appliances.

We are not here to impose a style. We are here to understand yours.

We walk your space together

Once we have the brief, we tour the kitchen and any adjacent areas that might be affected — dining spaces, utility rooms, garden access. We discuss what is working, what is not, and where the opportunities lie.

We notice practical details: where plumbing and electrics currently sit, whether walls are load-bearing, how natural light moves through the room, and how you circulate between spaces. These observations inform the design from the very beginning.

We discuss scope and style

Based on our conversation, we outline what a bespoke project could look like for your home. This includes:

  • Layout options — whether reconfiguration would improve the result
  • Cabinetry style — shaker, contemporary, handleless, or something in between
  • Materials — worktops, finishes, hardware, and appliances
  • Indicative timeline — from design sign-off to installation completion

We provide a detailed quotation after design — every project is different, and we would rather talk through scope with you in person than guess from a website.

There is no obligation

The consultation is an opportunity to explore fit and feasibility. You may decide to proceed immediately, take time to think, or compare with other options. All of those outcomes are perfectly fine.

If you do choose to go ahead, we move into detailed design — developing layouts, cabinetry drawings, and material selections until every detail is agreed and signed off.

What our clients often ask

How long does the consultation take?
Usually between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on the complexity of your space.

Do both partners need to be there?
It is helpful if everyone involved in the decision can attend, but we can always follow up separately.

Can you advise on structural work?
Yes. If removing a wall or reconfiguring the space would deliver a better kitchen, we will say so and explain what is involved.

What areas do you cover?
We work across Hertfordshire — St Albans, Harpenden, Hertford, Watford, Berkhamsted, Hitchin, and surrounding towns.

Begin with a conversation
